VerbMate User Manual

About
VerbMate helps you practice your verb conjugation skills. You will be prompted with a pronoun, a verb in infinitive form and a tense. From this information, you must provide the correct conjugation, including the pronoun.

Learn at your own pace
VerbMate includes many tenses and verbs to practice, and more are being added every day. You can choose exactly which verbs and tenses you want to practice by using the checkboxes next to the verb or tense name. For example, if you only want to practice the verb être in the présent and passé composé tenses, simply uncheck every verb except être and uncheck every tense except présent and passé composé.

Detailed Verb Mastery Stats
VerbMate records statistics for each verb and tense. For each verb and tense you can see: the number of correct responses (indicated by green checkmark), the number of incorrect responses (indicated by red x) and the percent of responses which were correct (indicated by % symbol). This allows you to see how well particular verbs and tenses have been mastered and which areas need improvement.

Singular / Plural Indicator
The singular or plural indicator shows whether or not the pronoun is being used in a singular or plural context. In French, for example, this incicator will only be shown with the vous pronoun because it is the only pronoun in french that can be singular or plural depending on context.

Gender Symbol
The gender symbol shows whether the pronoun is being used in a masculine or feminine context. In French, for example, some pronouns are always masculine or always feminine (ils, elles) however some pronouns can be used in a masculine or feminine context (tu,nous, vous).

Show Gender Symbols Option
For pronouns which can have multiple genders (tu,nous, vous), the conjugation of some verbs in certain tenses is different. In French, verbs which are conjugated with être in the passé composé tense are usually like this (sortir, partir). By default, VerbMate will only show the gender symbol when the gender must be known in order to correctly conjugate the verb. If you want to challenge yourself, you can choose to always show the gender symbol. The changes will take affect with the next verb prompt.

Special Character Buttons
In order for your conjugation to be correct, you must use correct accented characters when needed. You can use the special character buttons to input these characters, but it is reccomended that you enable the international keyboard layout for your operating system. This will allow you to input special characters more easily. The international keyboard layout makes used of dead keys. For example, when this layout is enabled, when you type the apostrophe (single quote) key, nothing will happen. If you type the apostrophe key followed by the e key, you will get an e with an acute accent (é). If you want to actually type an apostrophe, you must type the apostrophe key followed by the space bar. Is is possible to have multiple keyboard layouts, such as the standard US layout together with the international layout. In this case, you can assign a shortcut key to switch between the layouts. Left Ctrl + Left Shift is commonly used for this purpose. See the support website of you operating system manufacturer for detailed instructions on enabling international keyboard layouts.
